On November 9, 2020, the International Organization for Standardization Biotechnology Committee (ISO/TC 276) officially released the data management and data release standard for the Microbial Resource Center (ISO 21710). This is the first ISO-level data standard in the field of international microbiology, and it is also the first international standard formulated by my country under the leadership of the International Biotechnology Standards Committee (ISO/TC 276). The standard was drafted by the Ma Juncai team of the National Microbial Science Data Center (World Microbial Data Center WDCM).
For a long time, because each microbial resource center uses different data formats for data management and sharing, it has greatly affected users' access to preserved resources and related information, greatly hindering the efficiency of microbial data exchange and sharing resources on a global scale, and hindered The further utilization of microbial resources by academia and the biological industry. This standard provides a set of data fields for data release. It aims to improve the data exchange and high-quality management of the Microbial Resource Center (MRC) through the application of unique identifiers and unified data formats, and helps to share microbial resources Promote the realization of follow-up benefit sharing. The release of this standard will help promote the improvement of the quality of global microbial data management, improve the availability and interoperability of global microbial data, and provide the necessary data standard basis for efficient international sharing and integration of microbial data. The issuance of this standard is of great significance for enhancing my country's right to speak in the international biological big data field.
The proposal of this standard is based on the practical experience accumulated by the national scientific plans such as the global microbial species catalogue and the global microbial model genome sequencing project organized by the team, and has been gradually modified after three years of discussions with ISO/TC 276 and WDCM experts from various countries. Perfect formation. Since the project was proposed, it has attracted the attention of ISO/TC276 member states. The members of the project team include experts from 11 ISO/TC276 member states including China, the United States, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Japan. At the same time, it has received extensive support from microbial resource centers in various countries.
The National Microbial Science Data Center is jointly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Finance, and is built and operated by the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The center has long been committed to the construction of data resource system and data sharing services in the field of microbiology. The data content completely covers microbial resources, microbes and cross-technology methods, research processes and engineering, microbiology, microbiology technology, and microbiological literature, patents, experts, and achievements The whole life cycle of microbiological research. The center has been working on data collection for more than 30 years in the field of microbiology. The data sources cover more than 100 domestic institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, other scientific research institutes, universities, and enterprises. In addition, it has received data collection and global sharing from 120 units in 46 countries around the world, making it the most important data center in the global microbiology field.
